SEO for online marketplace

Can anyone recommend a known strategy to optimise my online marketplace where the only generated content is user generated with short lived auctions?

The strategies I have in mind so far are:

- link building / link exchanges
- community forum (but this takes a lot of time to generate content)
- paid search or paid advertising
- Social media / bookmarking sites

any other suggestions appreciated.
