I recently faced a strange Outlook issue where the application stopped opening normally. I tried to Open Outlook in Safe Mode, thinking it would bypass the problem, but instead Outlook failed to launch in safe mode completely. It would freeze for a few seconds and then close without showing any error message.
At first, I tried some manual troubleshooting steps:
• Created a new Outlook profile
• Disabled add-ins from Control Panel
• Ran outlook.exe /resetnavpane
• Used Quick Repair for Microsoft Office
• Tried the Inbox Repair Tool (scanpst.exe)
Some of these steps helped temporarily, but the issue kept returning. After checking multiple community threads, I realized the main problem was likely PST corruption. That’s when I tested the DRS Softech PST Recovery Tool.
The tool scanned my damaged PST file and recovered emails, attachments, contacts, and even old calendar entries without changing the folder structure. What I liked was that it also previewed mailbox items before saving them. I didn’t need advanced technical knowledge to use it.
A few things I learned from this issue:
• Corrupted PST files can stop Outlook from opening even in Safe Mode
• Add-ins are not always the real cause
• Office reinstall doesn’t always fix mailbox corruption
• Keeping a backup PST file is extremely important
After repairing the PST file, Outlook finally started working normally again. If anyone else is stuck because Outlook failed to launch in safe mode, first try the manual fixes, but also check whether your Outlook data file is damaged. That turned out to be the real issue in my case.
