Hi everyone,
I’ve recently moved to Amsterdam and have been slowly exploring the city’s incredibly diverse food scene. One thing I’ve noticed is the growing popularity of Indian cuisine here, and I’m curious to hear thoughts from others about what makes a place truly qualify as a top Indian restaurant in Amsterdam.
For me, it’s not just about spice levels or variety of curries — though those matter too — but about authenticity, how closely the food sticks to traditional roots, and whether it manages to create that familiar feeling of comfort that Indian food often brings.
I’ve tried a few places around De Pijp and Centrum, and one experience that stood out (for reasons that go beyond just the food) was at a place called Holi Indian Restaurant. It's tucked away but feels very grounded in the kind of cooking that seems to be passed down through families. The menu wasn’t overwhelming, but focused, which I appreciated — and the thali options felt like they were designed more for people who know Indian food than for tourists.
I had a few questions for those who’ve explored the Indian food scene more deeply here:
. What indicators do you look for when choosing an Indian restaurant in a European city like Amsterdam?
. Do you prefer places that lean toward North Indian classics like butter chicken and naan, or those that explore South Indian or even regional specialties?
. Have you found any places where the vegetarian options feel like more than just an afterthought?
. How important is atmosphere vs. authenticity when choosing a place to eat Indian food abroad?
Also, if anyone has explored Holi as well, I’d be interested to hear what you thought. I went there without reading reviews, and ended up chatting with the staff a bit — it was interesting to learn that a lot of the recipes come from traditional home-style cooking rather than standardized restaurant fare.
They’re located near the city center, and for those who want to check out the menu beforehand, here's their site:

And if anyone wants to call ahead for reservations or just ask about dietary options, their contact is:

I’m hoping this thread becomes a place where people can share experiences — not just names of places, but why they consider them worth visiting. What makes something stand out? Is it the food, the service, the background of the chefs, or something else entirely?
