Hey ladies, I really need some advice because I feel like I'm going crazy and my mom and I are bumping heads over this.
I'm getting married in about six months, and we are doing a daytime Nikah ceremony with close family, followed by a bigger reception later. I am currently shopping for my Nikah dress and honestly, I am so overwhelmed by all the options and the family pressure.
My mom and my aunts are pushing super hard for me to wear a traditional deep red or maroon outfit with extremely heavy gold embroidery. I understand that it's the classic South Asian bridal look, but for a daytime event, I just feel like it's going to be way too harsh and incredibly heavy. I've tried on a few of those 20lb lehengas and I can barely breathe, let alone sit comfortably on the stage for hours.
I personally have been dreaming of something much softer and more ethereal. I really want a pastel color—maybe a soft ivory, mint, or blush pink with delicate silver Zardozi work. I found a few stunning examples of exactly the vibe I want in this nikah collection. The lighter fabrics like organza and pure raw silk just look so much more elegant and comfortable to me, and the silver handwork catches the light beautifully without looking gaudy.
But every time I show my family these lighter options, they tell me I’m going to look "washed out" or that I won't look like a "real bride" because the colors are too muted.
Has anyone else dealt with this kind of pressure? If you wore a pastel or white/ivory dress for your wedding or Nikah, did you regret not going with traditional red? Did you feel bridal enough? Also, how did you convince your family that a lighter dress can still look formal and bridal?
