Choosing an Ethernet cable

Hello! Can you please tell me which Ethernet cable is best for home network? I have several rooms in my house, and I want to connect computers directly to the router to have a stable internet connection. I see that there are different categories — cat 5e, cat 6, cat 7… I’m a little confused. There’s not much of price difference, but I don’t want to overpay for something I don’t need. It’s important that it works stably, without interruptions, and is enough for the future. The distance between the router and the computer is about 20 meters. What do you recommend?

In your case, a Cat 5e cable would be fine. It supports speeds up to 1 Gbps, which is more than enough for most home connections. Many people don’t know, but cat 5e speed is the standard for gigabit internet, and it’s enough for streaming, gaming, and work. If you don't plan to connect equipment with 10 Gbps support in the near future, there is no point in overpaying for Cat 6 or Cat 7. In addition, Cat 5e is easier to lay, especially if the wiring goes through corners or through walls.

I am following the topic, I will also soon move and have to set up the network in the new apartment. So far I can't decide whether to buy something "for growth" or something basic is enough. I see that a lot depends not only on the cable, but also on the equipment - routers, switches, etc. I am also interested in how shielding affects and how important it is in normal home conditions.
