The use of Plastic shopping bags below 50 microns is prohibited due to their significant environmental impact. These thinner plastic bags are more prone to tearing and are often discarded after a single use, contributing to increased plastic waste. Because of their lightweight nature, they are easily carried by the wind, leading to widespread littering in urban, rural, and marine environments. Moreover, plastic shopping bags under 50 microns are not economically viable for recycling processes due to their low recovery value and difficulty in handling. They often clog machinery in recycling facilities, causing operational inefficiencies. Furthermore, their thinness accelerates the breakdown into microplastics, which are harmful to wildlife and ecosystems. By restricting the use of plastic shopping bags below this thickness, governments aim to reduce plastic pollution, encourage the use of more durable and reusable alternatives, and foster a more sustainable approach to consumption and waste management.
