Basically to give structure to the content of a web page - You can specify what links are part of the site's navigation, what sentences are headers and what blocks of text are paragraphs pertaining to those headers. Tables can present a tabular data and establish the relationships of the data sets.

HTML is the mark up language that all web pages are written in. Without HTML there would be no web pages.

HTML is written in the form of HTML elements consisting of tags enclosed in angle brackets (like <html>), within the web page content. HTML tags most commonly come in pairs like <h1> and </h1>, although some tags represent empty elements and so are unpaired, for example <img>. The first tag in a pair is the start tag, and the second tag is the end tag (they are also called opening tags and closing tags). In between these tags web designers can add text, further tags, comments and other types of text-based content.
The purpose of a web browser is to read HTML documents and compose them into visible or audible web pages. The browser does not display the HTML tags, but uses the tags to interpret the content of the page.

Re: What is the purpose of HTML

HTML is used to create the basic elements of webpages, so that other more advanced web coding languages (like Javascript) can manipulate those basic elements. HTML can be used to code an entire website, but for more complicated sites other languages are generally used in cooperation with HTML.
